The Myth of Anubis
In the old kingdom of ancient Egypt, Anubis was considered the most important god of the dead. He is depicted either in full animal form as a jackal or as a human body with a jackal head. Jackals were considered a threat to ancient Egyptian burials because they were scavengers who would dig up and uncover the bodies. Who better to fight the jackals then a jackal, so Anubis became a jackal.

The role of Anubis as god of the dead not only included protecting the dead but also preparing the recently deceased for the afterlife. Anubis's tasks began with assisting with the embalming and mummification of the dead. Later, he would assist the deceased by guiding their soul across the threshold between the world of the living and the world of the dead.

Finally, Anubis was the Guardian of the Scales, basically weighing the hearts of the dead. Ancient Egyptians believed that good deeds made the heart heavier while evil made it lighter, so weighing it would determine the person's worthiness for entering the underworld or a heavenly existence - an excellent reason for leading a good and honest life!

The Myth of Bastet
Bastet was originally portrayed as a lioness sun goddess; however, she quickly evolved into the cat goddess that is so recognizable in modern times. She was seen as a warrior deity, protecting both the human pharaoh as well as the high god Ra.
